What is cannabis tincture?

A cannabis tincture is a liquid herbal extract made from cannabis plants. It is created by steeping decarboxylated cannabis buds or trim in high-proof alcohol (such as Everclear or grain alcohol) over a period of time. The alcohol acts as a solvent, drawing out the active compounds from the cannabis, including cannabinoids like THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), as well as other beneficial plant compounds.

The process of decarboxylation, which involves heating the cannabis to activate its cannabinoids, is necessary to convert the non-psychoactive THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) into THC, the compound responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis.

Cannabis tinctures are popular among those who prefer a smoke-free method of cannabis consumption. They offer several advantages, such as precise dosing, faster absorption into the bloodstream, and discreet use. Tinctures can be ingested orally by placing drops under the tongue or mixing them with food and beverages. They can also be applied topically for localized effects.

Due to the potency of alcohol-based tinctures, users are advised to start with small doses and wait for the effects to kick in before considering additional amounts.

How to make cannabis tincture?

To create a cannabis tincture, which is a potent herbal extract, follow these steps. Remember to always comply with your local laws and regulations regarding cannabis use:

Step 1: Gather your supplies

Prepare the following items: high-proof alcohol (such as Everclear or grain alcohol), decarboxylated cannabis buds or trim, a mason jar, a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, and amber glass dropper bottles for storage.

Step 2: Decarboxylation

Decarboxylate your cannabis by baking it in the oven at around 240°F (115°C) for about 30-40 minutes. This step activates the cannabinoids, making the tincture more potent.

Step 3: Combine cannabis and alcohol

Place the decarboxylated cannabis into the mason jar and pour in enough alcohol to cover it completely. Seal the jar tightly.

Step 4: Infuse the mixture

Store the jar in a cool, dark place for a minimum of two weeks, shaking it gently every day to enhance the infusion process. The longer the mixture infuses, the stronger the tincture will be.

Step 5: Strain and store

After the infusion period, strain the liquid through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean container, removing any plant material. Pour the tincture into amber glass dropper bottles for storage. The amber color helps protect the tincture from light, preserving its potency.

Step 6: Dosage and use

To use the tincture, start with a small dose (e.g., one drop) under the tongue or mixed with a beverage. Wait for about 60-90 minutes to assess the effects. Gradually adjust the dosage as needed for your desired outcome.

Remember to label the bottles clearly with the tincture’s potency and date of preparation for future reference.

Disclaimer: Cannabis laws vary by location, so ensure you’re in a region where cannabis use for tincture-making is legal and/or has been prescribed by a medical professional.
